In the months ahead, my worst fears became reality when I was forced to confront serious loss: of\u00a0appearance, confidence, and identity. But these challenges also became\u00a0the crucible\u00a0for my growth.<\/p>\n<p>My positive mindset became my superpower and the catalyst for my own resilience. Through a positive mindset,\u00a0goal-setting, visualization, and leaning on a trusted team, I\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0just\u00a0survive,\u00a0I developed my ability for resilience. I learned that resilience is not something\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0born with, but rather a skill you sharpen through hardship, practice, and choice.<\/p>\n<p>By thirty, I was VP of Marketing. What got me there\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0just my intellect; it was emotional intelligence, adaptability, and the ability to empower others even when the outcome\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0certain. Over the past four decades,\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0distilled my learnings into what I call the\u00a0ReBAR\u00a0Framework\u2014a tool designed to help leaders build resilience,\u00a0recover from\u00a0setbacks, and lead with clarity and confidence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The\u00a0ReBAR\u00a0Framework: 4 Steps to Building Lasting Resilience\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Reflect.<\/strong><br \/>\nDaily reflection sharpens self-awareness and fuels growth. Ask yourself:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What am I grateful for? When you ask\u00a0this question of yourself\u00a0daily, the underpinnings of a positive mindset are in reach.<\/li>\n<li>What did I learn today?<\/li>\n<li>What can I\u00a0do differently\u00a0tomorrow?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Intentional reflection creates the mental space to learn from challenges and recognize progress\u2014essential in high-pressure leadership roles.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Build.<\/strong><br \/>\nYou need the right infrastructure to weather tough moments. That means:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cultivating a positive, growth-oriented mindset<\/li>\n<li>Surrounding yourself with a supportive network<\/li>\n<li>Maintaining balance outside of work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Leaders must invest in their emotional infrastructure the same way they invest in technology or strategy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Act.<\/strong><br \/>\nWhen adversity hits, execution matters. Develop the disciplineto:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Prioritize\u00a0what\u2019s\u00a0in your control<\/li>\n<li>Set achievable, focused goals<\/li>\n<li>Take consistent steps forward<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Resilience is built in\u00a0the doing. Progress\u2014even small wins\u2014restores confidence and builds momentum.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Renew.<\/strong><br \/>\nThis is where growth crystallizes. Ask:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What did I learn from this experience?<\/li>\n<li>How has it changed my priorities or perspective?<\/li>\n<li>How can I build on this growth?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Renewal turns pain into\u00a0purpose.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0where setbacks become leadership assets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why Resilience Is a Business Imperative\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Resilience\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0just a soft skill\u2014it\u2019s\u00a0a bottom-line asset. High performers and organizations that thrive under pressure share common traits:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They learn from failure faster<\/li>\n<li>They stay focused under stress<\/li>\n<li>They adapt to changing conditions<\/li>\n<li>They\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0waste energy on what they\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0control<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Think about Howard Schultz, turned down by 200 investors before launching Starbucks. Start meetings with a simple \u201cwhat\u2019s one win from the past week?\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong> Normalize Failure<\/strong><br \/>\nMake space for failure as part of learning. Celebrate lessons learned in post-mortems. Reward initiative, not just results.<\/li>\n<li><strong> Simplify Goals<\/strong><br \/>\nPick one needle-moving\u00a0objective\u00a0in each domain\u2014personal and professional. Remember, if you have too many priorities, your focus will be\u00a0compromised\u00a0and it will be harder to recover from setbacks.<\/li>\n<li><strong> Build a Support Ecosystem<\/strong><br \/>\nYou can&#8217;t power through everything alone. Why? Because I made reflection and goalsetting a part of my life. Grit is about having passion and not giving up. People with grit tend to be more hopeful, goal-oriented, and optimistic, and that leads to resilience and the ability to bounce back.<\/p>\n<p>Change often exists outside our control; however, how you respond to it is completely within your control. If we focus on what we can control, like being present and expressing gratitude for all we have, it allows us to develop the mindset for success. Taking control of our lives reinforces our self-belief. Taking control is about attitude, preparation, and the effort we put\u00a0in to\u00a0set\u00a0our course in a direction we\u00a0desire. Do not allow someone else to set the agenda for you.<\/p>\n<p>As I began to take control of my own life, my\u00a0perception\u00a0of myself changed. Over time, instead of looking in the mirror and having moments of disappointment about the way I looked, I began to see battle scars that made me proud of who I was. Those scars do not remind me of my pain but represent my healing and progress. Embrace change and you will gain tremendous wisdom.
