Research shows<\/a>\u00a0we judge our own vulnerability\u00a0through a\u00a0more negative\u00a0lens than\u00a0others\u00a0do. In\u00a0what\u2019s\u00a0known as the \u2018beautiful mess effect\u2019,\u00a0the\u00a0moments we\u00a0may\u00a0perceive as weakness, others might view as courageous<\/a>.\u00a0I learnt this the day I got escorted off Facebook’s headquarters in Silicon Valley.\u00a0I had flown from Melbourne with one mission: find Mark Zuckerberg and make him laugh with my best five minutes of Facebook jokes. To\u00a0capture attention,\u00a0I dressed as a giant “Like” button.<\/p>\n

After standing outside\u00a0Facebook\u2019s\u00a0campus\u00a0in my costume for\u00a0nearly an\u00a0hour, the comms guy agreed to give me a tour. I signed in with security, buzzing with excitement. I felt on top of the world\u2026Then he got a phone call.\u00a0\u00a0He turned, looked me straight in the eye, and asked:\u00a0“Were you outside Mark’s house last night?”<\/p>\n

Not exactly the sentence you expect to hear when\u00a0you’re\u00a0dressed as an oversized thumb.<\/p>\n

Completely thrown off, my body went into full panic mode. My face flushed hot, my throat tightened, and my voice shot up a few octaves.\u00a0“No\u2026 I have no idea where he lives,\u201d\u00a0I stammered. And even though I told the truth, my body language screamed guilt. Moments later,\u00a0I was\u00a0escorted off the property.<\/p>\n

What I saw as failure,\u00a0others\u00a0saw as courage\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

I felt humiliated. I had been promoting this quest on social media for weeks and I was certain everyone would now see me as a ridiculous failure. But the opposite happened. People rallied around me. They cheered for me. They thought the story was bold,\u00a0funny\u00a0and brave, and supported the aftermath even more than the quest itself.<\/p>\n

What I saw as\u00a0a\u00a0catastrophic failure, others saw as vulnerability. Daring vulnerability, even. That experience taught me something\u00a0fundamental: vulnerability\u00a0doesn’t\u00a0push people away. It draws them in.\u00a0And for business owners, that connection is everything. People\u00a0don’t\u00a0buy from the most polished brand; they buy from the person or company they trust. And vulnerability\u00a0and truth\u00a0build\u00a0trust.<\/p>\n

We often believe people are judging our mistakes, but more often\u00a0they’re\u00a0connecting with them \u2013 and in the best case,\u00a0they’re\u00a0inspired by them. When we take a creative or courageous leap of faith, it shows others\u00a0what’s\u00a0possible. As academic, author and researcher Bren\u00e9 Brown explains, vulnerability\u00a0isn’t\u00a0weakness;\u00a0it\u2019s the origin of creativity and\u00a0<\/a>innovation<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Your body always tells the truth\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Facebook incident revealed something else that was crucial:\u00a0incongruence\u00a0destroys trust.\u00a0As humans, we are wired to read nonverbal cues.\u00a0Research shows even babies can read emotional expressions before they understand words<\/a>.\u00a0So\u00a0when your words say one\u00a0thing\u00a0but your tone, posture or energy says another, people feel the disconnect instantly.\u00a0That’s\u00a0what happened at Facebook; the comms guy\u00a0wasn’t\u00a0responding to my words; he was responding to my nonverbals.<\/p>\n

And this is where vulnerability\u00a0and honesty\u00a0really\u00a0matter\u00a0because the moment you start protecting or defending yourself, a disconnect occurs.<\/p>\n

Why “I don’t know” builds credibility\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

I learnt this lesson again early in my speaking career while delivering a keynote\u00a0presentation. During the Q&A, an audience member asked a question outside my area of expertise. One of my agents was watching me for the first time, and I wanted to appear like \u201cthe expert\u201d.\u00a0So instead of admitting I\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0know the answer, I pushed ahead and answered anyway. But as I spoke, I could feel myself drifting and rambling\u00a0\u2013 hoping\u00a0no one noticed I was out of my depth.<\/p>\n

They noticed. We always notice when someone is performing a persona instead of telling the truth.\u00a0After that keynote, I\u00a0made a decision: I would never pretend to have an answer I\u00a0don’t\u00a0have. Now, “I don’t know” is one of the most powerful phrases I use. And every time I say it, my credibility rises. People trust honesty more than perceived perfection.<\/p>\n

Vulnerability in the\u00a0small moments\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

So how does vulnerability show up every day in business? In the small, simple moments: saying “I need help with this pitch deck” in a meeting, being truthful about what you don’t yet know in a new role, admitting when you make a mistake as a leader, or being honest about your experience, timelines, or capacity in small business.<\/p>\n

Vulnerability accelerates trust \u2013 and trust is the foundation of relationships,\u00a0leadership,\u00a0and genuine connection.\u00a0\u00a0We\u00a0don’t\u00a0connect with perfection. We connect with truth, and with the human behind the business. In an age of ever-increasing artificial intelligence, vulnerability\u00a0remains\u00a0uniquely human.\u00a0It\u00a0creates instant connection.\u00a0Your influence grows when you show up as your full, imperfect, and brilliant self.\u00a0(Even if,\u00a0occasionally,\u00a0you show up dressed as a giant “Like” button.)<\/p>\n
