In just 15 years, Netflix\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0just change how we watch TV and film \u2013 it rewrote the rules of production and distribution. What began with on-demand streaming soon made DVD rentals\u00a0obsolete, and\u00a0later transformed into a powerhouse of award-winning original content. Similarly, during the COVID-19 crisis, Moderna\u00a0demonstrated\u00a0the power of mRNA technology by creating vaccines in months rather than years. This was more than a scientific breakthrough; it created a new model for \u201cplatform-based biotech\u201d capable of responding to global crises faster than ever before.<\/p>\n<p>Work itself is shifting too. Hybrid models and the gig economy \u2013 enabled by platforms such as Upwork and TaskRabbit \u2013 are redefining employment. Artificial intelligence is augmenting and automating professional work, while mounting sustainability pressures demand that\u00a0organisations\u00a0rethink how they\u00a0operate. These shifts are happening alongside geopolitical upheaval and new social movements, creating an environment in which both industries and everyday life are constantly being reinvented.<\/p>\n<p aria-level=\"2\"><strong>Why traditional change continues to fail\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And yet, despite this turbulence, many\u00a0organisations\u00a0still rely on traditional approaches to change \u2013 top-down, mechanistic\u00a0programmes\u00a0that rarely deliver. The evidence is\u00a0sobering:\u00a0around 70% of change initiatives\u00a0fail to\u00a0achieve their intended outcomes (McKinsey, 2015). Employees themselves confirm the disconnect: Gartner (2019) found that 39% resist change due to poor communication and lack of understanding. Transformation often falters not because of strategy, but because people feel excluded from shaping it.<\/p>\n<p aria-level=\"2\"><strong>A new way of seeing change\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s\u00a0needed is a new mindset \u2013 one that\u00a0recognises\u00a0organisations\u00a0as living systems made up of people, not machines made of parts. People form networks of relationships, and transformation takes place as groups think, act, and relate differently. In other words, change is a social, human process. Successful movements start small, grow through these networks, and sustain themselves as new ways of thinking and behaving take root.<\/p>\n<p aria-level=\"2\"><strong>Organisations\u00a0as living beings\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We often hear the phrase \u201cpeople are our greatest asset,\u201d yet reality tells a different story. Gallup\u2019s 2024 global survey found only 23% of employees were truly engaged (\u201cthriving at work\u201d), while the remaining 77% were either disengaged or actively resistant \u2013 the so-called \u201cquiet quitters\u201d and \u201cloud quitters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the heart of this problem is what we might call a \u201cmachine mindset\u201d \u2013 the belief that people can be slotted into roles like interchangeable cogs. Biology offers\u00a0a different lens. Life itself\u00a0operates\u00a0on core principles, and these can be applied to\u00a0organisations. Embracing this living systems perspective creates the conditions for successful, lasting change.<\/p>\n<p aria-level=\"2\"><strong>Change as a movement\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If\u00a0organisations\u00a0are living, then change is better understood as a movement. It\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0spread through mandates but through energy, connection, and conversation. It often begins with a small \u201ccell\u201d \u2013 a group of people experimenting with new\u00a0behaviours\u00a0\u2013 before rippling outward. When others see the results, they join in, until the change becomes embedded across teams and functions. Sometimes the movement even leaps outside the\u00a0organisation.<\/p>\n<p>Toyota\u2019s Continuous Improvement (Lean) movement is a powerful example. Starting in the 1950s with incremental changes to production, Lean principles spread through worker involvement and a relentless focus on improvement. In early 2007, Obama assembled a small team of seasoned strategists who crafted the message of \u201cHope and Change\u201d and built a digital infrastructure to support it. By mid-year, the campaign had spread into key states, opening field offices and training local leaders to run\u00a0neighbourhood\u00a0teams. This\u00a0decentralised\u00a0approach gave communities real ownership.<\/p>\n<p>During the primaries, momentum accelerated. Through the\u00a0MyBO\u00a0platform and social media, volunteers\u00a0weren\u2019t\u00a0just participants \u2013 they became\u00a0organisers\u00a0and advocates, spreading the message themselves.\u00a0What began as a campaign became a genuine grassroots movement, drawing in people who had\u00a0never before\u00a0been politically active.\u00a0By late 2008,\u00a0the energy\u00a0had become unstoppable. Grassroots\u00a0organising\u00a0and record-breaking turnout powered a historic victory and redefined how campaigns \u2013 and change \u2013 could be built in the digital age.<\/p>\n<p aria-level=\"2\"><strong>In summary\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our struggles with transformation reflect a deeper misunderstanding of\u00a0organisations\u00a0themselves. They are not machines; they are living systems of people connected\u00a0in\u00a0networks. Transformation happens as these people think, act, and relate differently. Change succeeds when it grows as a movement \u2013 a chain reaction that starts small, gains momentum, and spreads across the system.<\/p>\n<p>For leaders, the lesson is clear: stop trying to control change from the top down.
