It provides direction and focus, boosts motivation, enables performance\u00a0tracking\u00a0and promotes accountability.<\/p>\n<p>My journey from English soccer coach to building a multi-million-dollar sports company in the U.S taught me a lot about goal-setting \u2014 about what to do and what not to do. Some entrepreneurs get their goal setting wrong and set themselves up for failure by making these mistakes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Setting unrealistic goals<\/strong> \u2014\u00a0Shooting for targets that are beyond reasonable can lead to increased stress and burnout for both the entrepreneur and their team. Pursuing\u00a0objectives\u00a0that ignore market realities or resource constraints can consume valuable assets that could be better\u00a0allocated\u00a0to more\u00a0feasible\u00a0opportunities.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Setting vague goals<\/strong> \u2014\u00a0For example, listing \u201cincrease growth\u201d as a goal without specifics lacks measurables and context. Entrepreneurs without clear goals are more apt to be disorganized, make poor decisions, and get sidetracked.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ignoring the purpose<\/strong> \u2014\u00a0Not having a \u201cwhy\u201d behind the goal leads to setting goals that\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0align with your values or the overall business strategy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Focusing on outcomes over processes<\/strong> \u2014\u00a0Entrepreneurs can get so caught up in\u00a0the end result\u00a0that they neglect the habits, systems, and daily grind\u00a0required\u00a0to get there. Setting a goal without breaking it down into daily or weekly action steps leaves you without a clear path forward.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Becoming too rigid<\/strong> \u2014\u00a0Sometimes due to in-house or market factors it\u2019s necessary to adjust a goal downward. But a rigid adherence to the initial plan can lead to tunnel vision, making the business unable to adapt.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s\u00a0amazing what clear goals can do for you. Whether\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0mounting an almost unbelievable comeback in a soccer match or hitting\u00a0a new sales\u00a0record, having the correct destination in mind is a huge part of getting there.<\/p>\n<p>The opposite is also true. If you\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0know where you want to go, you can end up putting a lot of effort into going in the wrong direction.<\/p>\n<p>To avoid wasting your time,\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0a simple process\u00a0you can use to figure out where you want to go and the steps necessary to get there. With that game plan in place, it becomes far easier to start making consistent progress.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Visualize\u00a0all of\u00a0your goals, starting with the aspirational ones\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With the visualization approach, ask yourself: What would your life look like if you could wave a magic wand and have whatever you wanted? No restrictions, no limitations.<\/p>\n<p>I like to think of this as a \u201cwhat if\u201d exercise. \u201cWhat if I could retire at fifty?\u201d \u201cWhat if I could buy that beach house?\u201d \u201cWhat if I could start my own company?\u201d \u201cWhat if I could have that big family?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thinking like this can feel unnatural sometimes. It can seem childish. Why waste time daydreaming? But\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rowancenterla.com\/the-power-of-visualization-imagining-yourself-doing-something-helps-you-achieve-your-goal\/#:~:text=The%20power%20of%20visualization%20lies,controlling%2C%20and%20executing%20voluntary%20movements.\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">evidence<\/a>\u00a0that visualizing helps your brain subconsciously seek out ways to achieve what you want.<\/p>\n<p>Soccer players have been employing visualization techniques for generations. The legendary Wayne Rooney used to use an old Pel\u00e9 trick to get the upper hand before a game.\u00a0He\u2019d\u00a0ask the kit man the day before the match what color United and the opposition would be playing in. That night,\u00a0he\u2019d\u00a0go home and visualize tearing the defense apart \u2014 in detail, using the colors he knew both teams would be wearing. The exercise clearly worked for him.<\/p>\n<p>Your brain can do the same thing with opportunities to lead you toward your goals \u2014 if you give it clarity\u00a0on\u00a0the direction you want to go.\u00a0Let\u2019s\u00a0imagine\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0setting up your ideal life as\u00a0your\u00a0starting eleven in a soccer match.\u00a0We\u2019ll\u00a0play a straightforward 4-3-3 formation.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Forward line<\/strong> \u2014\u00a0What you want for your body and mind \u2014 physical, mental, and emotional goals.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Midfield<\/strong> \u2014\u00a0This covers goals related to your family, personal life, and friendships.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Defense<\/strong> \u2014 Consider the things that strengthen your foundation and stability. That\u2019s what you want in your professional, spiritual, community, and financial life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-258725\" src=\"https:\/\/ceoworld.biz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/ciaran-mcardle-1.webp\" alt=\"Ciar\u00e1n McArdle\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ceoworld.biz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/ciaran-mcardle-1.webp 1080w, https:\/\/ceoworld.biz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/ciaran-mcardle-1-300x300.webp 300w, https:\/\/ceoworld.biz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/ciaran-mcardle-1-1024x1024.webp 1024w, https:\/\/ceoworld.biz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/ciaran-mcardle-1-150x150.webp 150w, https:\/\/ceoworld.biz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/ciaran-mcardle-1-768x768.webp 768w, https:\/\/ceoworld.biz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/ciaran-mcardle-1-540x540.webp 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Create your plan: Define your steps and timelines\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With a vision of where you want to go in place, all you have to do is plot the steps to get there. You can discover these steps simply by continuing to shrink the timeline on\u00a0all of\u00a0your goals. What do you need to\u00a0do in the\u00a0next year to be on track for each of your three-year goals? What do you have to do each quarter to hit one-year targets? What about each month? And each week? And each day?<\/p>\n<p>When you feel ready to take your planning to a higher level,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0time for you to break out your weekly planner. This holds\u00a0the important\u00a0information about your weekly actionable tasks and how to get stuff done. I\u00a0actually print\u00a052 of them the first week of\u00a0January\u00a0so there is never an excuse to skip planning my week.<\/p>\n<p>My weekly planner (available on my\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/soccerofsuccess.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">website<\/a>) goes like this. On the left-hand column, list the areas in your life that you have responsibilities for and require action each week.\u00a0Let\u2019s\u00a0call these \u201croles.\u201d Make sure there are no more than seven roles \u2014 typically five is the norm. These should be both work and personal responsibilities, as the weekly planner ensures balance through your work\/personal life.<\/p>\n<p>Then I write the three tasks per role I need to achieve for the upcoming week based on my monthly goals. Once this is filled out, there are three more planning steps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I add into the daily section of the weekly planner the non-negotiable, time-sensitive appointments or commitments I\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0skip.<\/li>\n<li>Then I add my workouts for the week.<\/li>\n<li>I set the 21 tasks (three tasks for each of the seven roles) that I have committed to into time-specific blocks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And there you have it. Your weekly planner is complete, and you are ready to smash your week!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Time to perform\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Execution is often frustrating in soccer. A manager can only do so much. They choose the team, and they train the team. But once the game starts,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0on the players to perform.<\/p>\n<p>But\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0still a lot that they can control. If a team practices regularly on aspects of the game where they need to improve, they usually will improve and be prepared for\u00a0all of\u00a0those game situations.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s\u00a0your aim here: You want to create a situation in which the only\u00a0option\u00a0is to execute on your plan, to take away all your\u00a0excuses\u00a0so the only\u00a0option\u00a0is the\u00a0hard work\u00a0that leads to success.<\/p>\n<p>By having a plan written out and scheduled down to the half hour, you remind yourself what you\u00a0have to\u00a0do and why\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0doing it. That makes it much easier to remain motivated and to complete the work consistently.<\/p>\n<p>By using this method, you\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0even need to remain motivated or remind yourself why you are doing it. You already did that in the planning.
