AI initiative\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/councils\/forbestechcouncil\/2024\/11\/15\/why-85-of-your-ai-models-may-fail\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">failure rates<\/a>\u202fhover around 85 percent.\u00a0I watched the following exchange among\u00a0an\u00a0executive team of\u202fa\u202fFortune 500 financial\u00a0services firm.\u202fDespite spending $3.7 million on its AI initiative and deploying some genuinely impressive technology, the team\u00a0couldn\u2019t\u00a0agree on whether its AI investment was a success or a failure:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#8217;s not what we asked for,\u201d the CTO\u00a0pronounced at\u00a0the executive review of its AI initiative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cActually, it\u2019s exactly what you asked for,\u201d the data science lead shot back. \u201cAnd we built a system with 94 percent prediction accuracy \u2014 currently the best across our industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The CFO cut in, \u201cBut where are the cost savings? We\u2019re six months in, and we haven\u2019t seen a penny of the $12 million in operational efficiencies you promised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The COO shook her head. \u201cYour insights are just not actionable. And they\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0fit our operational workflows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The CMO added, \u201cAnd customers are complaining about the new process. That\u2019s understandable, as economic value from AI typically manifests in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cost reduction as tasks become automated and resources are optimized<\/li>\n<li>Revenue growth from new offerings, improved targeting, or enabling price optimization<\/li>\n<li>Margin expansion resulting from improved operational efficiency<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Take the experience of an insurance client who implemented an AI-powered fraud detection system. The risk department\u00a0celebrated\u00a0reduced fraud losses of approximately $167M annually. The operations team valued the 73-percent reduction in false positives that\u00a0was\u00a0lowering their workload. Customer service appreciated the 29-percent drop in legitimate transaction declines.\u202fCrucially, all three departments experienced genuine improvements.<\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0represents\u00a0the ideal scenario for multidimensional AI\u00a0value \u2014\u00a0where the system creates positive outcomes across different stakeholder groups simultaneously.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Competitive advantage that creates brand recognition or capabilities competitors can\u2019t easily replicate<\/li>\n<li>Market differentiation by offering unique experiences or solutions that stand out<\/li>\n<li>Innovation acceleration through compressing development cycles and enabling experimentation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>3. Operational value of an AI transformation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Operational value often creates compound effects. Better quality reduces rework, which<\/p>\n<p>improves throughput, which enhances capacity\u00a0utilization. This creates a value chain\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0greater than the sum of its parts.
