Can you audit it? Can you\u00a0operate\u00a0it safely\u00a0at\u00a0scale?\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0where serious AI in compliance lives.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What does \u201creal-time risk\u201d mean in practice, and why does it matter?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A: <\/strong>Real-time risk means the system can assess activity as it happens, not days\u00a0later;\u00a0because the harm is often immediate. For\u00a0fintechs\u00a0and banks, risk isn\u2019t just \u201cdid something suspicious occur?\u201d\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0also:\u00a0Are we enabling fraud? Are we violating sanctions? Are we onboarding the wrong entity?<\/p>\n<p>Practically, real-time risk requires three capabilities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Low-latency\u00a0decisioning (fast enough to be useful)<\/li>\n<li>Context-rich scoring (good enough to be correct)<\/li>\n<li>Clear actions (flag, block, suspend, request info, escalate, log)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When you get this right, compliance stops being a drag on the business and becomes a trust accelerator.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Many CEOs worry that faster risk controls mean more regulatory exposure. Conversely, when your compliance posture is strong, it becomes a growth lever: faster approvals, smoother onboarding, fewer surprises, better relationships with partners and regulators.<\/p>\n<p>In many companies, the compliance stack is the hidden constraint on growth. Fixing it unlocks capacity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What have you learned personally as a CEO building in a regulated industry?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A:<\/strong> Two things stand out.<\/p>\n<p>First, in regulated markets, credibility compounds.\u00a0You win by being consistently honest about tradeoffs:\u00a0what\u2019s\u00a0possible today,\u00a0what\u2019s\u00a0risky,\u00a0what\u2019s\u00a0measurable. Overpromising is fatal.<\/p>\n<p>Second, you\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0build trust with a slide\u00a0deck,\u00a0you build it through operational rigor. That means investing early in governance, security posture, and customer outcomes even when\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0tempted to chase speed.<\/p>\n<p>The irony is: the more disciplined you are, the faster you can move.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you had to name \u201cthe new compliance stack,\u201d what does it include?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A:<\/strong> I\u2019d\u00a0describe it as three layers:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Data trust<\/strong>: clean ingestion, enrichment, entity resolution, and consistent identity across systems<\/li>\n<li><strong>Decision trust<\/strong>: models + rules that are measurable, testable, and explainable enough for the risk context<\/li>\n<li><strong>Audit trust<\/strong>: case management, evidence trails, change logs, reporting, and governance<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Most companies have pieces of this. The winners unify\u00a0it\u00a0so learning loops are fast: what you see in investigations improves future detection.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where do you see financial crime prevention heading in the next 2\u20133 years?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A: <\/strong>Two shifts.<\/p>\n<p>First, financial crime will become more industrialized, more automation, more velocity, more cross-channel behavior. Detection will need to become behavioral and network-aware, not just rules-based.<\/p>\n<p>Second, compliance teams will adopt more \u201ccopilot\u201d workflows: systems that suggest next steps, assemble evidence, and reduce manual effort, while humans\u00a0retain\u00a0accountability.<\/p>\n<p>The institutions that win will be those that combine AI capability with governance maturity. AI without governance creates risk. Governance without AI creates inefficiency.
