Justin Kates knows what it takes to win\u2014on and off the court. Long before becoming Managing Partner at DuMoulin Black, one of Canada\u2019s leading securities law firms, he learned the discipline and focus that now define his leadership style through years of competitive tennis.<\/p>\n

\u201cTennis gave me determination, grit, and discipline,\u201d Kates says. \u201cThose lessons have allowed me greater success in all facets of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

From his days competing in NCAA Division I tennis at Western Michigan University to earning an ATP world ranking in 2014, Kates carried forward the habits that separate good players from great ones: preparation, precision, and perseverance.<\/p>\n

From Associate to Managing Partner<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kates\u2019 career at DuMoulin Black began more than 14 years ago, when he joined as a junior associate. Through consistent performance, sound judgment, and a commitment to his clients, he climbed the ranks to become Partner\u2014and eventually Managing Partner.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was an honour to be elected as Managing Partner,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s a position that I\u2019m deeply passionate about because it allows me to build and develop our team and shape our firm\u2019s core values.\u201d<\/p>\n

Under his leadership, DuMoulin Black has continued to grow its reputation as one of Canada\u2019s top firms. The Globe and Mail recognized it as one of the country\u2019s leading law firms in 2024, and several of its lawyers have been named among Canada\u2019s best.<\/p>\n

Kates\u2019 own track record reflects that excellence. He has been recognized by Best Lawyers in Canada for mergers and acquisitions since 2021, was named a Lexpert Rising Star in 2019, and was selected by the TMX as one of Canada\u2019s \u201cNext 150: Young Entrepreneurs and Forward-Thinkers\u201d in 2017.<\/p>\n

Building Leaders, Not Just Lawyers<\/strong><\/p>\n

What stands out most about Justin Kates<\/a> isn\u2019t just his legal expertise\u2014it\u2019s his focus on people.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always enjoyed developing talent,\u201d he explains. \u201cMy role gives me the opportunity to be hands-on in building our team and creating an environment where everyone can thrive.\u201d<\/p>\n

His approach blends mentorship with autonomy, giving young professionals the confidence to lead early in their careers.<\/p>\n

Passion for Business and the Venture Markets<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kates has carved out a niche in securities, corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate law\u2014especially within the venture public markets. It\u2019s a space he\u2019s passionate about because it allows him to work closely with entrepreneurs on innovative transactions.<\/p>\n

\u201cI enjoy working with entrepreneurs on novel deals across cutting-edge industries,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s exciting to help bring new ideas to life and see how these ventures can grow into something impactful.\u201d<\/p>\n

That entrepreneurial energy mirrors his own drive. Kates doesn\u2019t just see legal work as paperwork\u2014it\u2019s about building value, helping businesses grow, and guiding them through complex transitions.<\/p>\n

Lessons in Focus and Balance<\/strong><\/p>\n

Outside the office, Kates still finds time to compete\u2014this time on the tennis court rather than in the boardroom. He remains one of Canada\u2019s top senior players and has represented Canada on the world seniors national team in 2018, 2019, and 2023.<\/p>\n

He also won the BC provincials in the 40+ category in 2022 and 2024 and continues his long streak of victories at the Hollyburn Country Club tournament, which he\u2019s won annually since 2008.<\/p>\n

For Kates, tennis and business success share a common foundation: focus and balance.<\/p>\n

\u201cSetting aside time to exercise has always helped me maintain a calm mind during high-stress business deals,\u201d he says. \u201cMeditation and fitness are essential to keeping a healthy mind and body.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also prioritizes learning. \u201cI try to spend 30 minutes reading each day and listen to podcasts on the go,\u201d Kates says. \u201cI do my best to surround myself with knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n

That constant pursuit of growth\u2014mental, physical, and professional\u2014is what defines him. \u201cMy own set standards of continued learning and growth keep me moving forward,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n

Defining Success on His Own Terms<\/strong><\/p>\n

When asked what success means to him, Kates\u2019 answer reflects both ambition and perspective.<\/p>\n

\u201cSuccess is building a life where I\u2019m deeply engaged in work I\u2019m passionate about\u2014solving problems that light me up\u2014alongside people I genuinely respect and learn from every day,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s having the energy and flexibility to train hard, play competitive tennis, and still be fully present for my family.\u201d<\/p>\n

That blend of drive and balance has carried him through every stage of life\u2014from the tennis court to the managing partner\u2019s chair. It\u2019s also what inspires those around him.<\/p>\n

Today, his motivation goes beyond deals and rankings. \u201cMy son inspires me,\u201d Kates says. \u201cBefore he arrived, it was my passion for entrepreneurship and business growth. Now, it\u2019s about setting an example for him\u2014showing what hard work and balance look like.\u201d<\/p>\n
