When you talk to Irwin Brar<\/a>, you don\u2019t just hear about buildings. You hear about people, responsibility, and a long family legacy that started long before he launched his own company. Today, as CEO of Apex Construction and COO of Ridge Apartments, Brar is helping shape the future of affordable housing\u2014one project at a time.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never planned on becoming a leader in this space,\u201d he says. \u201cI just followed the work my father taught me. The mission grew from there.\u201d<\/p>\n

His path wasn\u2019t traditional, but it built the foundation for the kind of leader he is now\u2014steady, community-focused, and deeply involved in the details of his industry.<\/p>\n

Early Life: Between Vancouver, Alberta, and India<\/strong><\/p>\n

Brar was born in Vancouver, BC, into an Indian immigrant family. When he was three, his parents moved to Alberta to start their first hotel business. The shift wasn\u2019t easy, but it opened the door to the construction world that would later define his career.<\/p>\n

Much of his early childhood was spent in boarding school in India, an experience he says taught him resilience and independence. \u201cYou grow up fast in a place like that,\u201d Brar recalls. \u201cIt helped me handle pressure before I even knew what pressure was.\u201d<\/p>\n

This blend of cultures\u2014Canadian upbringing, Indian schooling, and entrepreneurial family life\u2014shaped his outlook early on.<\/p>\n

How a Family Trade Became a Career Vision<\/strong><\/p>\n

Construction wasn\u2019t a corporate decision for Brar. It was a family trade. His father began building houses in 2005 and later expanded into hotels in 2007. Irwin Brar<\/a> grew up watching job sites, long hours, and quiet problem-solving.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy dad didn\u2019t teach with speeches,\u201d Brar says. \u201cHe taught by doing. If something broke, you fixed it. If a wall wasn\u2019t straight, you corrected it. That stuck with me.\u201d<\/p>\n

By the time he earned his Bachelor\u2019s degree in Business Administration, he had both the academic background and the hands-on experience to run projects with confidence.<\/p>\n

In 2018, he launched his own construction company. It wasn\u2019t glamorous in the beginning\u2014just steady work, careful planning, and learning how to lead teams through real-world problems. But it grew fast.<\/p>\n

Building 400+ Affordable Homes Each Year<\/strong><\/p>\n

Today, Brar\u2019s company builds more than 400 affordable housing units every year, serving communities across Western Canada. His focus is simple: make homes that regular people can afford and feel proud of.<\/p>\n

\u201cAffordable housing doesn\u2019t mean cutting corners,\u201d he says. \u201cIt means being smart with design, knowing your materials, and understanding what families actually need.\u201d<\/p>\n

He often visits sites personally. He talks to trades workers. He listens to concerns about timelines, budgets, or materials. Those habits come from the early days when he had to do everything himself\u2014and from his father\u2019s example.<\/p>\n

People who work with Brar say his calm style sets the tone. Problems don\u2019t become crises. They become part of the job.<\/p>\n

And in an industry where pressures are high\u2014from land costs to supply chain swings\u2014this mindset matters.<\/p>\n

Leadership Philosophy: Simple, Direct, and Honest<\/strong><\/p>\n

When asked what kind of leader he tries to be, Brar doesn\u2019t offer buzzwords. \u201cI try to stay honest,\u201d he says. \u201cI don\u2019t pretend to know everything. I\u2019m willing to learn from anyone on site.\u201d<\/p>\n

He believes leadership is most visible when things go wrong\u2014weather delays, shortages, contract issues. Years of watching his parents navigate the hotel business taught him that the goal isn\u2019t to avoid challenges but to work through them without losing your sense of purpose.<\/p>\n

His teams describe him as present but not overbearing. He gives people room to solve problems, but he\u2019s there when solutions stall. \u201cPeople work better when you trust them,\u201d he adds. \u201cYou can\u2019t build anything alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Passion for Cars: A Creative Outlet Beyond Work<\/strong><\/p>\n

Away from construction, Brar has a passion for cars and modification. He buys, builds, and shows them at local car meets.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, cars are a stress relief,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s hands-on. It reminds me of building with my dad. You take something apart, you improve it, and you see the result right away.\u201d<\/p>\n

Friends say this hobby mirrors his work philosophy: take something with potential and elevate it through skill, discipline, and creativity.<\/p>\n

Giving Back: Community as a Core Value<\/strong><\/p>\n

Brar\u2019s leadership extends beyond business metrics. His family and companies donate significantly each year, supporting local organizations and needs.<\/p>\n

They run a monthly food bank drop-off for their community. They also regularly support the local youth foundation in Redcliff, helping young people gain confidence, resources, and hope.<\/p>\n

\u201cI grew up watching my parents give, even when we didn\u2019t have much,\u201d he explains. \u201cIt\u2019s not about money. It\u2019s about responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Road Ahead<\/strong><\/p>\n

As the demand for affordable housing grows, Brar sees both challenge and opportunity. He wants to build more, innovate more, and stay grounded in the values he learned as a kid\u2014discipline, duty, and community.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe work is never done,\u201d he says. \u201cEvery project teaches you something new. That\u2019s what keeps me going.\u201d<\/p>\n
