{"id":259296,"date":"2026-01-19T17:09:31","date_gmt":"2026-01-19T22:09:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ceoworld.biz\/?p=259296"},"modified":"2026-01-19T17:09:31","modified_gmt":"2026-01-19T22:09:31","slug":"embracing-empathy-why-the-big-three-types-of-strategic-empathy-bring-hard-results","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ceoworld.biz\/2026\/01\/19\/embracing-empathy-why-the-big-three-types-of-strategic-empathy-bring-hard-results\/","title":{"rendered":"Embracing Empathy: Why the Big Three Types of Strategic Empathy Bring Hard Results"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Steve Payne, Vice Chair of Consulting for Ernst &amp; Young Americas\u00a0said,\u00a0\u201cEmpathy is not only a \u201cnice to have\u201d,\u00a0but the glue and accelerant for business transformation in the next era of business.\u201d\u00a0This quote comes from a\u00a02021\u00a0E&amp;Y Survey showing how empathy can raise profit, productivity, creativity, trust, and collaboration in an organization, and suggests that empathy may be the \u201csecret sauce\u201d for organizational success.\u00a0Let\u2019s\u00a0be\u00a0real: this\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0just someone\u2019s opinion.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0from a survey\u00a0from\u00a0an\u00a0internationally known\u00a0Big Four consulting group.\u00a0Thought\u00a0Leaders like Simon Sinek and Seth Godin and Bren\u00e9 Brown have been espousing empathy\u2019s power in leadership for over a decade.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0a predictor of leadership success, a means to understand people\u00a0and processes\u00a0for better profit, productivity, and innovation, and a hidden\u00a0leadership\u00a0superpower, but somehow it still\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0get the respect and implementation it deserves.\u00a0Why not?<\/p>\n<p>Part of the problem is that most people still\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0understand what it is.\u00a0Empathy has an undeserved reputation for being soft and creating leaders that are pushovers or people-pleasers.\u00a0Many\u00a0believe\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0about feelings, all\u00a0puppies\u00a0and rainbows, and worry that\u00a0too much empathy (if\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0even a thing)\u00a0might make them look submissive\u00a0or\u00a0weak-willed.\u00a0These are myths, and nothing could be further from the truth.\u00a0\u00a0While the \u201cI feel what you feel\u201d kind of empathy is\u00a0certainly\u00a0the most well-known type of empathy, there have been\u00a043\u00a0different kinds\u00a0of empathy throughout its study, and not all of them relate to feelings.\u00a0\u00a0At its heart empathy\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0about\u00a0feelings,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0about taking the perspective of the other person to create understanding.\u00a0\u00a0That understanding is the difference between a good leader and a great one.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, there are three kinds of empathy that are must-have skills for leaders: emotional empathy, cognitive empathy, and self-empathy.\u00a0\u00a0And the word \u2018skill\u2019\u00a0is used\u00a0purposefully here.\u00a0\u00a0While empathy has\u00a0some\u00a0biological basis, there are also parts that\u00a0anyone can learn\u00a0and practice just like\u00a0typing, or\u00a0playing basketball, or\u00a0acquiring\u00a0the skills to be an exemplary leader. It just takes time and a willingness to do things differently, which is to say,\u00a0it takes strategic vision and courage.\u00a0\u00a0Let\u2019s\u00a0start by understanding the Big Three Strategic kinds of empathy:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emotional\u00a0Empathy\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is the \u201cI feel what you feel\u201d kind of empathy\u00a0and\u00a0helps humans understand one another on a person-to-person level.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0powerful, but on its own it can be uncontrolled and bring too much heart to situations.\u00a0\u00a0It can also create\u00a0empathy\u00a0fatigue and burnout when\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0used too much.\u00a0\u00a0Emotional empathy\u00a0works better in one-on-one situations than it does for groups of people.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0why we react\u00a0differently\u00a0to the news\u00a0when one little girl has fallen down a well than we do\u00a0when\u00a0we see\u00a0large numbers of\u00a0war\u00a0casualties.\u00a0They\u2019re\u00a0both terrible things, but the human mind can focus on a single person\u00a0easier\u00a0than on large faceless groups. Emotional\u00a0empathy is a\u00a0powerful\u00a0asset, but\u00a0leaders\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0always lead with\u00a0the\u00a0heart.\u00a0\u00a0Sometimes we need to lead the heart with the head, but you can do that and still use empathy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cognitive Empathy\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is the leader\u2019s secret empathy weapon, and\u00a0the kind\u00a0that\u00a0leaders should lean into.\u00a0\u00a0This is\u00a0where \u201cI logically understand what you\u2019re feeling\/experiencing\/thinking, but I\u2019m not feeling anything\u201d.\u00a0Sometimes we lead with the heart, but more often we need to make sound business decisions for the greater good, and having the heart involved\u00a0can keep\u00a0us from making the best decisions or completely understanding a situation.\u00a0\u00a0Cognitive empathy also\u00a0keeps leaders from being too soft.\u00a0Having empathy\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0mean not having boundaries, and cognitive empathy can help leaders make\u00a0hard\u00a0decisions\u00a0while knowing which soft skills are the most\u00a0appropriate for\u00a0a situation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Self-Empathy\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Make no mistake: this is the one that\u00a0gets forgotten\u00a0the most.\u00a0\u00a0Many\u00a0leaders\u00a0are driven, intelligent, and\u00a0highly\u00a0self-actualizing people,\u00a0but\u00a0the stress\u00a0of leadership can be\u00a0overwhelming, and they forget to give themselves the empathy that their position demands they give others.\u00a0\u00a0Leaders\u00a0take on heavy responsibility and, in the process, forget that\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0human too.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0no surprise that those in leadership can have a 35% burnout\u00a0rate and\u00a0suffer from\u00a0addictions and dysfunctions\u00a0to a greater degree than the general population.\u00a0They become unable to show themselves empathy, and how can someone\u00a0possibly expect\u00a0to show others empathy when they\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0show it to themselves\u00a0first?<\/p>\n<p>So\u00a0if empathy is a skill and something worth learning and implementing, where should a leader begin?\u00a0\u00a0It\u00a0starts\u00a0with three\u00a0small changes\u00a0and a daily commitment\u00a0to\u00a0integrating empathy as an actionable skill:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Take it back to kindergarten<\/strong>: Sometimes the easiest steps are the ones we already know, and that includes putting empathy into leadership.\u00a0\u00a0If empathy is about perspective taking, then begin with the question \u201chow would I feel\/think\/understand this situation if it were me?\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stay critical, not caring<\/strong>:\u00a0 When we put ourselves in another person\u2019s position, we often place emotional value on what we think or how we perceive the situation, but that only clouds our thinking. Instead of seeing the world through their eyes, we see it through our own, and often we jump to judgement. This is ineffectual at best, and destructive at worst. This is where cognitive empathy can be the key to understanding another without placing any emotional value on the situation.\u00a0\u00a0For a leader, keeping that clarity no matter the situation, is invaluable.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Remember that charity begins at home<\/strong>:\u00a0 You can\u2019t give what you haven\u2019t got, and that includes empathy. There are so many reasons why people in leadership positions deal with high rates of burnout, substance abuse, family issues, and a lack of resiliency, but an inability to effectively use self-empathy is a big one. It\u2019s the old adage of how you must put on your own oxygen mask before helping someone else put on theirs.
